Sonisphere Cancelation: Blame it on Poor Ticket Sales

As soon as the pairing of Queen and Adam Lambert was announced, a large number of fans around the world as well as from the USA bought concert tickets and made travel plans. But it just wasn’t enough. This week the concert-of-a-lifetime was called off. The cancelation of UK Sonisphere, which was to again be held on the vast grounds of Knebworth, has been blamed on poor ticket sales. We Americans are not the only nation with economic strife.

I have now learned that cancelation of the UK concert was not a solitary move. According to Sean Michaels of TheGuardian.co.uk, Sonisphere in Greece, Turkey, Italy and Sweden have also been cut. (I still have not seen any official word on the Moscow Queen with Adam Lambert concert.)

The only good news is that Queen has said they are looking for another venue. Adam also tweeted:
@adamlambert While I’m sad that the Sonisphere festival has been cancelled, I’m hopeful that Queen and I will share a stage again someday in the future.

The following is from Adam Sherwin of The Independent, a British publication.

Knebworth, the stately home which has rocked to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Oasis, faces a “huge hole” in its finances after the cancellation of a festival to have been headlined by Queen.

Martha Lytton-Cobbold, who manages the gothic Hertfordshire mansion which has been home to the Lytton family since 1490, is counting the cost of the decision to axe Sonisphere, a three-day heavy rock event which was due to take place in July. Poor ticket sales contributed to the cancellation of the festival, which was to have been headlined by Queen, with their new singer Adam Lambert, and also feature the bands Kiss and Faith No More.

First employed as a rock venue in the mid-70s, income from events staged at Knebworth Park bowl, which can accommodate 125,000 fans, has provided vital funds for repair work to the home, which was placed on English Heritage’s register of buildings at risk in 2010.

About Carol

I started writing on this site back in May 2009, not knowing what I was in for or where it would take me. I had no idea of the joy and personal satisfaction I'd find here. I never dreamed that I'd get to meet Adam, but that dream came true! The bonus of becoming such great friends with Lila and the other fans is what keeps me going. Music gets me though every day. In addition to Adam, I love Muse, Linkin Park, 80s and finding newer bands and supporting them by attending everything that's within 350 miles. With Adam, the boundaries are farther! Thanks for joining us on this ride! :)

  1. So excited for you going to the NNN award show ! Rumor has it you’ll be hearing Adam’s new single. Hope you guys win, you deserve it ! Remember every detail so you can tell us next week ! XOXOXO

    • Thanks sweetie! I’ll tell you everything we can remember. We’ve all heard the talk about him rehearsing a major electric show for the NNN Awards. Sounds like it could be his new single too! 🙂 I wonder if they’ll have oxygen on hand for this performance? And as soon as I’m allowed – you’ll know all the details!

  2. Interesting about the show site. Yes, people have to pick and choose, and basic living takes precedent over concerts. Maybe these huge outdoor concerts are a thing of the past. I know I want to see my performers up closer if possible. It’s been difficult for most performers to sell out venues in the U.S. Even though Adam performed at smaller sites, it’s still very impressive that his 2010 tour was practically a sell out. Thanks for nice article–different.

    • Your so welcome, Ali. I’m glad I could bring something new. Thanks for your insight on the outdoor concerts. I have to say I agree. We’re so used to following Adam at these smaller venues, and having a much more personal experience. I don’t know what Lila and I would have done at Sonisphere if we hadn’t been up front! And with what they hoped would be 65,000 in attendance each day, that would have been tough! Fingers crossed for a USA show from Queen and Adam! 🙂

    • Very interesting!! I wonder if we could tie in the movie “2012” that Adam sang the theme song.

Which was such a beautiful video and he sang his heart out, I still watch the recording.
