Interesting article “End Times For ‘Idol'”

I have to admit… I haven’t watched Idol for the last two seasons. I really did try the season after we were introduced to Adam, but I just couldn’t get into it. I mean, how could I after they finally crowned an actual “star”? In any case, it seems like I’m not the only one. Ann Powers says “there are no more songs to sing” in this article she wrote for NPR.

Tonight, when Ryan Seacrest announces who has won the 11th season of American Idol — when the confetti falls and Jennifer Lopez sheds a perfect dewy teardrop and Randy Jackson’s thought bubble explodes with “Dude, that was a moment moment MOMENT” and Steven Tyler purses his immortal lips in that vampire-connoisseur way he does, smelling the perfume of another sweet young victory — I will be out to dinner with friends, far from the agony and ecstasy finalists Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips will endure. After six seasons of following Idolas a critic and unashamed enthusiast, I’ve finally found myself truly bored while watching the show. Not even the soul ministrations of my latest favorite, third-place finalist Joshua Ledet, could cure my disaffection.”

  1. I totally agree with you. It seems so boring since Adam. Nobody has , in the whole time this show has been on, has been able to hold my interest or make me hold my breath until the next week’s show like he did – & probably never will. I have caught pieces of the show here & there, but never have voted for anyone else again. I’m sure we’re not alone with how we feel. Adam changed everything & raised the bar so high that he can’t be topped, at least for me.

I totally agree with you. I also held my breath waiting for Adams next appearance. Wish he could have sung 2 songs last week. He was so perfect up there.

  2. What great insight. I have continued to watch Idol hoping it gets better and that America will really pick someone deserving of the title..only to be disappointed. Since Adam was on the show all other contestants seem to lack charisma, creativity, passion, raw talent etc etc. He is the whole package and in comparison to him everyone else just seems boring! Congrats on this wonderful day Billboard #1 nobody else is more deserving!!

  3. Phillip Phillips ——–It can’t get any worse! no talent,no personality– can’t even carry a tune. I give up!

    • renogirl says:

I thought he did an excellent job with the Damien Rice song “Volcanos” He is his own kind of artist. so different than Adam. Surely not the vocal ability but he is an artist and has his own sound.

      Amen to that.

Here’s another way how things are different. I went to the”Official Watch Party” tonight at 5pm for Jessica. She lives in my neighborhood, how could I not support her? And Adam likes her too! Big surprise, Fox is not giving this party the east coast feed. NBC, CBS, ABC & Fox are here waiting for the extra 3 hours. Local Fox did take shots of the crowd to feed to LA Fox that they’ll use during the show but it’s not live reaction. They had the family at 7 pm watch the feed inside the truck & it was up to them if they shared it with the couple of hundred people inside. I left at 5:30 so I could go back home & clear out some space on my dvr & have returned at 7:30 to watch with everyone else. I hope I don’t find out who won before it’s time! I meet Claudia who is a close family friend & she told me Jessica told them she tried all last 2 days to find out where the feed would go San Diego so her group could watch but they said no live feed this year. I told Claudia when Lila &i planned the San Diego watch party for Adam that we ran into the same problems. Weird! So ends 1 phase of IDOL, I guess.

  5. You Know I have kept watching idol but just for one reason,to see Adam when he comes back to perform or mentor. He is one in a million and did break AI in my opinion. I am a Glambert through and through but if it wasn’t for Idol we wouldn’t have come to know this fabulous man so we have to give it some credit. Maybe the judges haven’t been able to find a talent that brings as much excitement to the audience as Adam did.I.m not dissing the talented singers we have seen but they don’t have it all like Adam.
The fact that Adam came second but has had such major success also makes a farce of the system that Idol uses. Congratulations Adam on all your success and AI you might not be around for much longer!

There will never be another Adam. He is the one and only Idol.

I still watch Idol but after Adam lost I quit voting, Jessica should have won this and I am truly disappointed that Phillip Phillips won. Even when they sang together close to the end of the show she sounded so much better. Oh well….at least Diana Degarma and Ace was a touching moment. I have been watching her on The Young & The Restless, she can act as well as sing.

Idol was boring and Phil Phillips is almost worst than Scotty McCreery. They might sell records in the USA, but I doubt they will go elsewhere. Bummed about Adam’s numbers, just don’t get it in America, but somehow he is #1. I’ll take it. I won’t read the stories because I’m sure there will be asterisks.

    • kat23mogan says:

If you read the Billboard article about Adam being number on on release week of Trespassing you will note that he sold 77K, and that they state that Adele’s 21, which is huge in total sales now, sold 76K its first week….so his cd has outsold the number one cd in sales in its respective first week…I think in terms of sales we also need to remember cd sales are down 9% across the board, the economic stress is hurting all sales. Adam will be fine…because this cd is amazing …love it…Want to help…buy extras to give as gifts to friends and relatives…you are helping sales and spreading the word about Adam’s amazing voice.

      • I like Adam but comparing this CD to 21 is a bit of a stretch don’t you think? She has some really well writtin songs on that CD. CD sells are totally different every year the eviroment is so hostile and evolving, singles are all the rage again and with youtube and the ability to copy into audio file I don’t see how anyone sells a million copies anymore. Most artist survive on the live venues now ie crazy ticket prices. I remember seeing three bands for a 10.00 ticket….good ole days. My IMO adam should have done a 50/50 CD half dance/electro the other more mainstream rock/radio pop/modern.

After watching Adam Lambert no one else has even caught my attention..He was and is the true American Idol!!

  10. Just had to come back here today, a happy, happy day for all we fans who have been with Adam thru all the ups and downs of the past 3 years.
Adam so deserves his No 1 spot. Dont worry too much about numbers etc people, in these times a No 1 is still a No 1. I think the success of “Trespassing” will continue to grow, remember the NCOE video hasnt even been released yet, the album has rave reviews from everyone. What more could we want for our Idol.

  11. Justin Brent says:

It’s true Adam set the bar so high that it’s hard to continue watching Idol except when Adam
returns to perform. Continuing to watch the program has almost become insufferable now
that the program has become a showcase for the judges to perform and the winner is usually
someone who looks like the boy next door and usually sings like him. What a bore!!!!

I AGREE WITH THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE, AND MOST OF THE ABOVE COMMENTS.
ADAM HAS A UNIQUE TALENT, NOT EASILY TOPPED—A VOICE WITH INCREDIBLE RANGE.
HE HAS SUCH STAGE PRESENCE, EVEN ON IDOL HE GRABBED ATTENTION JUST BY HOW HE HELD HIMSELF WHEN HE PERFORMED. HAVING SEEN HIM LIVE, TWICE NOW, I CAN SAY HE HAS IT ALL DOWN–THE CONNECTION WITH THE AUDIENCE, THE SEXINESS THAT EVERYONE GAY, STRAIGHT, YOUNG OR OLD, MALE OR FEMALE, CAN FEEL, AND HE SEEMS UNAFFECTED BY FAME, NO MAJOR EGO ERRORS. IN THIS SEASON, I LIKE JOSHUA IMMENSELY, FELT HE WAS A STRONG PERFORMER WITH A LOT OF CHARM. JESSICA HAD A STRONG VOICE, NEEDED POLISH AS A PERFORMER, BUT SHE IS YOUNG YET. I HOPE TO SEE BOTH OF THESE KIDS PERFROM AND DO WELL WITH A CAREER IN SHOW BUSINESS, AS THEY BOTH HAVE TALENT. PHILLIPS SEEMS LIKE ANOTHER GRINNING IDIOT LIKE SCOTT, WHO IN MY OPNION WAS MORE ANNOYING THAN TALENTED. IDOL IS PRETTY PLAYED OUT FOR ME, THOUGH I ENJOYED TYLER’S ANTICS, AND WAS SURPRISED AT HOW SYMPATHETIC LOPEZ WAS WITH THE SINGERS. I TENDED TO AGREE WITH CRITICISM, BUT FELT THAT THEY WERE ALL A BIT SOFT ON THE PEOPLE, BEING MORE NICE THAN CRITICAL, WHICH ROBS THE SHOW OF THE SERIOUS TALENT. I WISH THE BEST TO JOSHUA AND JESSICA—THEY NEED TO REALIZE, THAT AS IN ADAM’S CASE, WININING #1 MEANS YOU ARE FREE TO PURSUE A CAREER MORE CREATIVE THAN ONE DICTATED BY IDOL STANDARDS, AND THAT FAME COMES TO THOSE WHO ARE TALENTED AND PERSERVERE. CHRIS ALLEN WHO? ADAM ROCK ON!

  13. Actually, I have continued to watch Idol. I’ve been waiting to see if anyone could ever top our Adam. Shame on me for even thinking that was possible!! I did like Joshua Ledet. Somehow that gospel gets to my soul.

For those of you who haven’t heard Adam sing in Brigadoon, do yourself a favor. Rock it’s not. But the absolute purity and control of his voice is beyond words. Go to YouTube.

I am moving and packing like crazy. Good thing Adam’s CD came out. I have it on the whole day and will until I’m finished.

That lucky fan who Adam pulled on stage in NJ…I’ve never been jealous in my life until I saw that! God, she wrapped herself around him!! Hmm hmm hmm!!!!!!!!!!

    • @Vonnie, I love Adam’s voice in Brigadoon. Have you seen the YouTube video of Adam performing in a telethon? His voice is magnificent…all way before Idol “discovered” him. Even the host of the telethon mentions his beautiful voice and asks him if he performs for bar mitzvahs.

I love Adam’s “Trespassing,” but I especially love his voice in the track, “Runnin.” It’s #13. The song showcases his rich tenor voice beautifully.

      Good luck with your move.

Thought I would share a picture of my birthday cake that was made by a co-worker. I love dancing, birds, playing Name That Tune, and of course Adam Lambert. She coordinated it all on this cake.

  15. I agree that Adam set the bar so high that it’s difficult for anyone who competes for the title. I do have to say that I thought Joshua Ledet did a hell of a job. I always enjoyed watching him perform and was very disappointed that he didn’t make the finals.

I’m not surprised that Idol’s numbers are down. Maybe if Tyler and Jennifer did their jobs and if Randy would still be the Randy from yesteryear. The guy did a 160! Tyler never made sense, and I couldn’t stand the way Jennifer never wanted to tell people how they truly sounded. I also crinched when she used the wrong tenses of verbs, which she did just about in every show. And what the heck happened to the Randy that used to give honest critique. He wimped out!

I think the voting system needs to be changed. The demographics of the show changed considerably. Idol caters to the young females and their moms. After Lee DeWyze beat Crystal Bowersox, I said that there would never be another female winner. People I said this to thought I was nuts, but I’ve been right so far. No 12 year old female is going to vote for the girl who they view as competition in their immature eyes. They are going to vote for the cute boy that they can imagine kissing.

I think Idol’s days are numbered especially when you have shows like “The Voice.” Have y’all ever seen Christina critique? She’s very honest and doesn’t beat around the bush like Jennifer. I watched half-way through this season of Idol. As long as Adam returns to sing, I’ll be watching.

  16. CONGRATULATIONS ADAM, You are our NO. 1 always and forever. Love your new CD. NCOE’s is one of my favorite, sure hope that will be your VCD!

  17. The only reason I watch Idol is I want to see how having ADAM exploded on that stage has affected this show and its contestants. And I should say its “End Times For Idol” is about right.
Nobody, there’s just nobody who is in the same league as ADAM. He is unique and incomparable.
CONGRATULATIONS again, ADAM, on your historic charting at #1.
I pray you keep breaking all records!

Watched AI religiously from first season until the end of “Adam’s season”! My family & friends KNEW not to call or bother me whenever Idol was on!! Yeah, that bad!! I loved Kelly, Bo Bice, Chris Daughtrey ~ Then there was Adam Mitchell Lambert!! Since Adam was screwed over (it was oblivious he should have won, if judged in talent, charisma, stage presence, etc.) the only time I will watch is if Adam Lambert mentors/or performs! AI is DEAD TO ME NOW! But I have to thank you with all my heart for introducing the world to the TREASURE that is Adam Lambert!! Fan of his till I breathe my last breath!!

  19. AllaboutAdam says:

EVERY singing competition since Adam has been on Idol – seems like a waste as far as I’m concerned. If i find myself getting interested in or excited about one of the contestants – I find that when I put in an Adam CD I’m stunned back to the fact that none can compare…. I still believe that no one can touch him in the talent category. Yes, there are plenty of good, deserving people on these shows. Listen to “Underneath” with your eyes closed. No one else can do that – what he does. It’s right up there (if not better) than how we felt about “Soaked”. He’s going to KILL “Underneath” in concert. Get ready to have your sox blown off with that one – it’s going to be a “moment” and … I CAN’T WAIT !!

  20. adam is the best.no one can be like him.
