How To Save Songs & Videos to Your Computer

I know many of you have been asking how to save songs and videos to your computer. Months before I started volunteering my time to this web site, I received some instructions for this. I muddled through and finally got Adam Lambert’s songs to download into my iTunes account. So after all the requests, I thought I’d publish the step-by-step directions so you can do this too.
Adam Lambert Pictures, Images and Photos
I’ll give you a little background story. Like many of you, I never thought about using an iPod or downloading music. After all, I have my entire music collection on vinyl, cassette and CD. What did I need a 4th version for? Plus, I like to buy the full CD and discover other tracks that are not played on the radio. I can see how handy it would be for the gym or for walks, but I can still use my 10 years old “strap-to-my-arm radio” and listen to my favorite morning show. And I still don’t see the need to shop through the grocery store or mall attached to a gadget. My stroller days are gone. I like to think my own thoughts and sometimes even have some peace and quiet. Can any of you relate?

Then along comes Adam. I did the YouTube searches and was so excited to hear his songs pre-Idol. But how could I keep them? Once he becomes a world-wide star, will he be releasing these older songs? I don’t think so. After listening to them enough times, you can tell they were from his beginner days. Adam’s even said they were like the poetry you would write in eighth grade. You’re proud of it at the time, but later you look back on it and you’re able to appreciate how far you’ve come. Soon after I discovered those wicked videos from The Zodiac Club and the Upright Cabaret. I wanted those songs and videos, but had no idea how to save them. At about the same time, American Idol had progressed far enough into the season that the contestants’ songs were now available on iTunes. We had an iTouch iPod sitting around from when we bought my son’s computer for college the summer before. Since he already had a video iPod with much more storage, he said I could have it. Thanks hon, but I really don’t know what I’d do with it. See paragraph #2. Ah-ha! Now I have something to use that iPod for. Zip, zip, zip – with some patient teaching by my son, all of Adam’s songs and videos from American Idol were now at my fingertips. Wow, what an energizing rush that was. Better than all those $30 bottles of Olay anti-age serum!

On other forums, people were asking how to download and keep the music from YouTube. A wonderful person responded giving some basic directions and I had my answer. I was able to easily download the songs, and somehow they “magically” went into my iTunes account without me having to designate that as the place to hold them. But after 3-4 days, they disappeared. So I downloaded them again, but this time burned them to a CD so I could have them in my car and forever, just in case Big Brother was going to yank them out of my computer again. I figured since this wasn’t something I paid for, maybe someone at YouTube was searching for the downloads and was yanking them away, like mom taking away the candy we weren’t supposed to be eating. I told you regarding this type of thing, I was a techie neophyte!

To answer this vanishing song problem, I must thank web site Administrator Lila Hayes for giving me the final pieces to the puzzle. Lila is so knowledgeable about all this techie stuff and helps me out every time I ask. She pointed out that there were no gremlins living inside my computer. Instead, I needed to create a folder to hold them. They had been loading into a Temporary file, and like all temporary things, disappeared after a few days. Mystery solved.

So, enough chit-chat! Here’s how to do it. I must tell you this is for PCs. I have no idea about Macs.

First, you need to create a folder to hold these songs, so they don’t disappear. Right click on your Desktop. Click New; Folder. Name this folder. I called mine Music. Brilliant, I know. I’ve even created sub-folders named Adam Lambert and General. Can’t live on a diet of Adam alone, can we? Don’t answer that!!

Command prompts are in bold.

Now you can make your own Adam Lambert CD. Find your favorite picture of Adam. Print it and cut it to fit in a CD jewel case.  You can even print up a list of songs to put on the back side. It will look great, I promise. Here’s Adam signing my CD at the Homecoming! That’s me in the sunglasses. Thanks again to Lila for taking this priceless picture!!

About Carol

I started writing on this site back in May 2009, not knowing what I was in for or where it would take me. I had no idea of the joy and personal satisfaction I'd find here. I never dreamed that I'd get to meet Adam, but that dream came true! The bonus of becoming such great friends with Lila and the other fans is what keeps me going. Music gets me though every day. In addition to Adam, I love Muse, Linkin Park, 80s and finding newer bands and supporting them by attending everything that's within 350 miles. With Adam, the boundaries are farther! Thanks for joining us on this ride! :)

Thanks a lot for this info.

Just so you know – I’ve just tried the music download on my Mac and it works very well. The keepvid one doesn’t always work for me but I now use Real Player downloader and it works like a dream.

It’s been a matter of trial & error to get something that works every time. mp4 would be a better option as then it doesn’t need converting from flv.

    Thanks for your post again.

  2. Just so you know, works well for this too – you can browse youtube or files you already have and convert any video to an mp3 or an mp4 video and save it onto itunes or any other media player….it’s easy, it’s free, and you don’t have to download anything. Only thing is you can only do 5 conversions a day unless you sing up. I discovered it recently and it works well for me – that’s how I got all my pre-idol Adam stuff onto my ipod! peace out

  3. oh and it works best for audios and by not downloading anything I mean downloading extra software for it to work

  4. cmhagey, thank you this is very useful! You are wonderful, but then we all know that! Hugs, Ingrid

  5. To download videos and save them on your computer, you can also use Realplayer!
And to rip the music from the videos, there’s another site that I prefer :

this is the one i use..sooooo easy and as yet i have not lost anything i have downloaded
same thing but a bit easyer just put in the addy and hit download

  7. What a fantastic tip! A change is gonna come is now my ringtone — woohoo — a big thank you 🙂

  8. Thank you so much for this information.

  9. Adamxtasy says:

WOW, what a coincidence. I just asked my kids how to do this 3 days ago and they said you can’t do it. ….and one is a technology major (not computer)…
So THANK YOU for this valuable info. I SO APPRECIATE IT. I love you guys.
I love some of Adams pre-Idol as much as or more than his current stuff.

  10. SA_Glambert says:

Wow, so many different ways. I’ve been using Anyvideoconverter, and I thought I was so clever. I’ll try some of your suggestions too.

Thanks for this great site. I just love reading all the news about Adam, and watching all his videos… and downloading them! I have a full collection on my ipod, and its growing daily. Everyone thinks I’m crazy, except for you guys, because, I think, you’re all just as Adam-crazy as I am. At least I feel understood in some circles.. haha.

BTW I have never wanted to download youtube videos to my ipod and phone until Adam came along. So I think we can all thank Adam for the knowledge that we’ve gained on these topics since he hit the internet.

I’m so jealous of all you guys that attended “his” concerts. Hopefully one day he’ll come to South Africa. Luckily I can watch his performances on my computer.

    • Yes, we can thank Adam for all the knowledge we have gained, and blame him for all of our
mispellings. Oh Adam see what u’ve done to all of us . It’s a goood thing.
Thanks to all of you for all this info, I will certainly use it.

  11. adamfan70 says:

Oh my, i just downloaded two videos, am so excited, thank you , thank you. Love this site, love Adam.

  14. IJustLoveYouAdam says:

Free Imeem is my choice for the computer. I have a full Adam playlist, all old and new songs, live and studio editions, that I listen to endlessly, all for free. You might be able to bring up my playlist when you put in the name Adam Lambert.

  15. Thank you so much.¡¡¡¡

  16. Bellelinda says:

Thank you cmhagey..I have wanted to learn how to do this and now I have your instructions..Great of you to share with all of us…Thanks again will try to do it today

  17. LibraLamb7 says:

Thanks so much for this info!!! I too am just learning how to capture the magic of Adam! Burned my first CDs of my life last week (my husband used to be the techie in our house, but since he passed away last year, I’ve had to learn to do a LOT of stuff by myself!). Still have his old Archos Jukebox mp3 player, but it’s kinda clunky & it still has his music on it (he would have voted for Kris, so you know what I mean) & I can’t bring myself to use it. Anyway, I think I’ll treat myself to a sleek little iPod w/lots of storage.

Your method of capture/covert/download/burn sounds better than the roundabout way I’ve been going. Am using RealPlayer since I had a bit of a “crash” & lost ITune library! Found my music, but now can’t open files w/iTunes…Note that I restored mp3 files OK(Thank God I had “Carbonite” online back-up!), but Adam’s Idol performances that I’d BOUGHT are now lost! Hate to pay for them again, so will try to find online & download again. Confess that I made neophyte error on a couple of tracks (from Upright Caberet, etc) & didn’t listen to whole song after download…went ahead & burned CDs only to discover that the ends of about 3 songs from YouTube were cut off! Bummer! Now have to go back, find those tracks, re-download & re-burn. Will try your way this time. Oh well, one learns by one’s mistakes…At least am listening to Adam all thru the process.

    • cmhagey, author here: When I started using the iPod, I took a free class on it at our Apple store. There I learned that anything you purchase from iTunes will be replaced by them if your computer crashes. Contact iTunes or go to your closest Apple store for info.

Glad to help everyone who didn’t know how to save the songs/videos before! We were all neophytes at one time!

  18. thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for this information!!
I was using Realplayer when downloading songs from youtube until it quit working after only a month. Realplayer really sucks and there is no information I coulld find online to resolve this problem that WORKED! So now I’ll just yank it out of my system and use your instructions!

I love listening to Adam’s voice…I love to hear every nuance & breath he takes in his singing voice…he is mind-blowing. Can’t wait for his first CD!!

  19. sashabxgirl says:

    Glamb 62

    thxxxxxxxxxx for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not done too badly before but now I have other ways of trying. I bought 12 itunes and burned Adam’s songs on a cd for the car. I also bought his AI video performances and saved them on my large hard drive.

Someone on this site told me about sothink .flv player and I was able to “capture” some of his tour performances via youtube. I had too many of the same songs but wanted the ‘best’ to keep. I still have them but my 30 day free trial of sothink is now gone.

I plan to try one video to see if I can follow through. I’ve made a new Word document with all the info above including the links to print and use as a reference.

  21. Thank you so much, for this! I have been wanting to do those, but just didn’t have an idea how. I am not in tune in the latest technology in music; I didn’t need those, until Adam came along!

  22. Dianne Hill says:

I have been doing this for awhile now MP3 Rocket is great for downloading music, haven’t tried video clips but I have some of the other stuff for that. I also have AVS Videoconverter which once the video clips have downloaded I can convert into DVD format, MP4 videos for my IPod, and MP3’s for CDs. Isn’t technology wonderful. I love to be able to convert all his concert tour footage and make it into a DVD, and I can then send a copy to a friend over in Australia who loves him too (well, why wouldn’t she). I love travelling on the bus to work and I can either listen to Adam on my IPod or watch the video clips on my IPod. Iooooooooooooooooove my IPod. I originally bought it so I could have all my U2 clips and songs on it (It has U2’s signatures etched into the back of it, so it is very special to me, I love U2, but now I love Adam more) but hey, there is room on my IPod for both so I am very happy.

  23. thanks for posting this thing… it help me a lot!!

  25. I think we should buy Adam’s “official” music and videos instead of downloading them for free. Adam (and all performers, song-writers, etc.) need to make a living! Adam’s AI album cost only $10.

However, we have no choice but to download pre-idol songs and concert videos from Youtube . So, thanks so much for all this information. I’m going to try tomorrow.

    • Dianne Hill says:

I would definitely buy if I could, but being in New Zealand the site will only let you get so far before it says “sorry, unable to buy from this site”, or something to that effect. Very frustrating, so I have no choice but to download any songs/videos. I will definitely be buying his CD when it comes out though. You girls don’t realise how lucky you are to be able to buy any of Adam’s songs or go and see him in concert, even if it is with all the other Idols.

Tonight I have been trying to make a DVD from my video clips downloaded from YouTube and I did manage it, but only one song, damn it. For the life of me I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. I don’t want to keep using 4.7Gb disk for one song. So I am going to have to be patient and wait for a friend who hopefully will be able to help me on Saturday. Luckily she is just as much an Adam freak as I am, so I will be in good company. Oh, and by the way, I hope you all have lots of memory on your computers because I have almost run out of memory, hence me wanting to make DVDs (I have plenty of CDs of Adam). My computer is running so slowly a snail would easily pass it in a race. I tried to defragment it, but apparently I don’t have enough memory to even do that. Think I might have to look at getting an external harddrive. This is all for Adam, I wonder does he realise how much he is costing us fans, oh but yes, he is worth every cent of it.

  26. OMG I am so excited. Tears of joy. I just put Oh My Ra on my ipod thanks to you. I have been trying to do this for the last 2 months. Yep, puter challenged here. THANK YOU so much!.

  27. Thank you so much for the link to the songs, and especially for the way to save songs and videos. Ii appreciate it so much. There were a few songs of Adam’s I have not been able to find anywhere, so I will try this for some of his older songs.

  28. Muchas gracias!!!, sabia convertir los youtube videos a mp3 pero no guardar los videos, aprecio mucho tus instrucciones. Thanks again!!!!

  29. Many Many thanks for posting this topic!!
We are all in a sense of withrawal from the tour, but not for long!
thankks!! We have Adam’s music in our hearts which will last, if not forever,
for a very very very long time.

  30. Thank you so much for posting all this information. I was able to download songs to my IPOD but, had no idea how to keep vids on my computer or make DVD’s of them!!! THANKS AGAIN 🙂

  31. Thank all of you for all the insight on how to download music and the videos, I made a copy of everything posted here, now all I have to do is “DO IT”. I am shaking just ready these Posts.
In the morning when my brain is fresh I am going to read these Posts and see if I can make sense out of them, I’m sure that they make sense, it is just me, it scares me but I will try it!!!
    Thank You!!!!
