Another American Idol Finale Shocker: Not the Lowest Rated!

It was a squeaker, but American Idol did it: It avoided posting its least-watched finale of the modern Idol era.

Instead, the show tied its least-watched finale of the modern Idol era. Which, in 2009, is still a feat.

An estimated 28.84 million, on average, tuned in last night’s Kris Allen coronation, per preliminary Nielsen data.

Final numbers weren’t expected to give Idol much of a boost since Nielsen has already factored in time zone differences and the show’s seven-minute overrun into the 10 p.m. hour.

If the estimate holds, last night’s Idol will be tied with 2004’s Fantasia finale for next-to-last place in the annals of Idol finales.

Some more finale factoids:

• Compared to last year’s David Cook party, last night’s Allen celebration was attended by about 3 million—or 9 percent—fewer people.

• Compared to TV’s other top shows, Idol held up slightly better than average. Consider: Last May’s top finales were posted by Idol, Dancing With the Stars, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, NCIS, House and CSI: Miami. This May, those shows finales’ were down, on average, 11 percent. Only one finale, in fact—DWTS’ results show—wasn’t down, and it wasn’t even up. (It matched last year’s number.)

• Among that finale bunch, last night’s Idol tied for fourth with Grey’s Anatomy, in terms of holding onto—or losing less of—last year’s audience. The DWTS results show, NCIS (down 2 percent), and DWTS’ decisive dance-off (down 3 percent) led the way. At the other end, House was down 23 percent.

• While Idol’s numbers conceivably could be crunched any old way, the Oscars would like to remind it still has scoreboard. The 36.3 million it commanded in February remains the season’s biggest prime-time audience for a single entertainment show.

• Idol, meanwhile, would like to remind its finale still has scoreboard over the Grammys as TV’s biggest music-industry platform. But the gap did shrink considerably. Last year Idol outdistanced the Grammys by 14.5 million viewers. This season it beat the awards show by “only” 9.8 million.

• Idol’s 2003 Ruben Studdard finale remains the franchise’s biggest, with 38 million viewers. The runners-up: 2006’s Taylor Hicks night (36.4 million), 2008’s David Cook upset (31.7 million), 2007’s Jordin Sparks win (30.7 million), 2005’s Carrie Underwood moment (30.3 million), 2004’s Fantasia and last night’s Kris Allen crownings, and at the end of the line, 2002’s Kelly Clarkson moment (22.8 million), which, unlike its descendants, aired (a) during the summer, and (b) before American Idol became American Idol.

  1. Adam was robbed of the title! Adam is clearly better than Chris! Oh well….non-winners usually do better than winners anyway…..

    Peace. Love. Adam.

    • I’m with you Skyler…..Adam was robbed….he is in a total different league…I’m starting to think he was too good for Idol…he will have a brilliant career! cant wait 🙂

      • I was really shocked when Kris won, but strangely I wasn’t very mad. Probably because Adam was happy for Kris. Maybe if Adam was more disappointed I would have been? 😛 Who knows!
Anyways I am sort of glad Kris won because he is a Christian but Adam is CLEARLY the better singer!!!
Usually the winners end up sounding the same in all of their new songs, so I’m thinking it was good Adam didn’t win because now he can go with probably any record company he wants xD It just sucks that he doesn’t have the title. THE American Idol. Oh well. I cannot WAIT till his CD comes out!

  2. wow, that vid is going to use up all my broadband!!!

i would like to give Adam an even bigger and more deserved congratulations! you have made this season a joy to watch and i am not sure what i am going to do for the rest of my life!
I know Adam will have a fantastic career and i wish him all the best, because if he has shown us anything during this season, it is that he can SING and that he deserves absolutely every fortune that comes toward him.
    so, congrats Kris.
    CONGRATULATIONS ADAM!!!!

          • DEAR ADAM:

American Idol just started a new run and you came along. I was so mesmerized with your pure talent and thought wow in this season A change is gonna come for real. After every performance you left me Feeling Good and having Satisfaction with my life. In every song you gave me a Whole lotta love and I embraced it excitedly. After last night’s coronation I felt like Crying and truely believed I was living in a Mad World. I wiped the Track of my tears and realized, Adam you are THE One, you where Born to be wild, and If I cant have you I dont want nobody baby!!!

            Yours truely,

            One of your true admirers

            • AdamAddict says:

              LOL!! Nice!
I guess you really hate the new song, huh? So “No Boundaries” added!

              • I heard No boundaries studio version by adam and mmm….dont hate but I LOVE HOW HE SINGS IT!!! the song is crappy i guess but he still managed to give it a rock twist…

                • AdamAddict says:

I disagree with Randy. Adam version is beter than Kris but you know for me to him to me and for him.LOL!!

    • WOW nice one really like it…hahahaha

  4. Adam – the true winner – has won the hearts of people all over the world (I live in Finland, Europe). I was such a joy to see perform each week, always leaving us gasping in awe and respect!
We can’t wait to get his CD’s and hope to be able to hear him live! His career will be brilliant!

I now have two new generation American Idols – David Cook and Adam Lambert!

One question: Does anyone know by how many votes Kris “won”? I was expecting to hear Ryan Seacrest say it when he announced the winner – as he did last year – but he didn’t. I haven’t found anything about that (the division of votes, either by votes or by percentage) anywhere, but I haven’t had time to really surf on the net yet.

    ALL THE BEST TO ADAM!
And thank you so very much for this fabulous website! I hope you can keep it up!

    Leena

  5. AdamAddict says:

    ADAM LAMBERT WON!! PERIOD!!

  6. no one could pull off those amazing songs on results night but the one and only adam lambert.. singing with kiss and queen.. omg! adam lambert, love you babe!

  7. Stephanie says:

God I love that KISS performance! It was so fitting and so ADAM!!

  8. ADAM WAS THE SHOW.seeing him makes me happy;) and the end makes be wanna say one thing people:only in america…………..

  9. I actually cried when the announcement was out, it was ridiculously shocking.
Anyway, Adam, we will be the 1st troops to buy your albums, forever and ever

  10. Adam's Rib says:

Not to worry. Adam will be just fine. I have never been a KISS fan, but the two together were fabulous! When he sang the low-key “Beth” and then immediately went into KISS mode, it was too much. It was brilliant. To say they brought down the house is an understatement. And the actual announcement of the “winner” was anti-climactic. Also, loved the costume!

  11. Toughen up says:

Toughen up people! They are both excellent entertainers and the vote revealed the winner. With the reaction of the folks in LA, it shows how out of touch they are with the rest of America. Appreciate and show respect, they are both winners.

  12. Fandomatic says:

About the ratings… One of the things that hurts ratings is the fact that you can watch shows at your leisure on line (not to mention DVRs) pretty soon after it airs. I think that has a bigger impact on ratings than any other one thing.

I remember back when… connections were slow as Forest Gump. But today, home technology is all about convenience. OF COURSE RATINGS WILL DROP!!

Just saying, if you want to watch your favorite shows, it follows that you have to watch in the time slot they are aired, or risk cancellation of your favorite shows.

  13. YOURSFOREVER says:

Without ADAM there is NO SHOW!
