Adam Lambert Talks Boats, Boys, and Bowie With The Music Fix

In this interview, my favorite part is knowing that he actually had a day off!!
Okay, that and also when asked he was asked his “guy type” and he answers…PRETTY BOYS!!
That totally made me giggle… like we didn’t know that!

01-07-2010 15:22 | Joe Nockles/
International pop sensation, Adam Lambert, called TMF’s Joe for a natter about boats, Bowie and boys.

~Where are you at the moment?

I am in Norfolk, Virginia.

~How’s the tour going?

It’s good! It’s really good. The audiences have been sold out every time, every venue we’ve been at. It’s really exciting. I’m having a blast.

~Cool. How do you find life on the road?

It’s good. It’s a lot of work. I mean, it is hard.

~Do you ever get chance to relax?

Yeah. I had a day off yesterday. It was really great. Some of my band and my dancers rented a fishing boat and, you know there’s not a lot to do in Norfolk, Virginia so we were like, “ok, What can we do?”. So, we found this boat and cruised around Chesapeake Bay and did some fishing and, you know, why not?

~Yeah, sounds fun. You’ve got a really, really passionate fan base. What’s the strangest thing one of your fans has done?

Erm, you know I get interesting gifts sometimes. Like, I get really sweet gifts but then sometimes it’s like handmade tchotchkes and you’re like “ok…thanks?”.

~Do you find there’s a lot of pressure on you? Like, the whole tour is on your head?

The pressure hasn’t gotten to me. I’m fortunate for that. When I get up on stage I do realise that if I’m not feeling it…it’s all on my shoulders. I definitely step up to the plate when I hit the stage. I have to. It can be draining in that regard, but it’s hard to mind because the audiences have been so intense. They give you a lot of energy.

~Do you ever miss your Broadway days?

Not yet. Part of the reason I wanted to go into this was because I wanted to be myself on stage. I wanted to be my own artist and I think that that’s been the most important part.

~Is there anything in your career that you want to do, but haven’t yet had the opportunity?

I would like to do some acting work, but I haven’t yet and there isn’t anything booked. It’s something that I’m curious about. I think it’d be really cool to be in a film.

~If you were to undergo a dramatic pop transformation (ala David Bowie, Madonna etc), what would you like to reinvent yourself into?

I don’t know. I guess if I wanted to do something really drastic, I’d go the complete opposite way from all the glam. You know? Do something really conservative just for the fuck of it, you know?

~Yeah, just you and a piano?

Yeah. In a plain suit and no make-up…But you know what, I’ve done that before. I don’t know if it would surprise anybody. That was kind of my schtick on Idol.

~Is there anyone who you’d like to collaborate with?

I’ve been really fortunate already, but I think it would be really amazing to collaborate with David Bowie. I think that would be incredible, but I think he’s pretty M.I.A.

~So, I read on Wikipedia that you’re “the first openly gay mainstream pop artist to launch a career on a major label in America”. Do you feel any responsibility to represent gay people in the American mainstream?

Not really. That’s definitely been an interesting point. I feel like, I’m honoured to be a part of that community and I’m honoured to be identified as the first blah-blah-blah-blah, but I think the thing about it is the only person I’m responsible for representing is myself. I think that it’s kind of ignorant to assume that just because I am one of the few, I have to represent a whole group of people.

~It’s interesting that there are so few openly gay people in the American media. You can only assume there are people who hide their sexuality. Do you think it’s hard for people to be gay in the American media?

Yeah, it’s really hard. I think there’s a reason why a lot of people in the entertainment industry are private about it. It becomes so exploited and sensationalised by the media in general. It’s all anybody wants to talk about. There is good that comes from that, because it raises visibility, it’s good for young people growing up who maybe need role models. I see that there is good that comes from it, but I also think that it can quickly overshadow the product that I have, which is music. Who I’m in bed with on my private time doesn’t mean that this is a good song or a bad song, you know what I mean?

~Do you think it might affect the number of female fans you’ve got?

I actually think it’s probably picked me up more female fans. It’s a catch-22. There’s probably the girl who’s like, “Oh he’s gay, so I’m not into it” and there’s the next girl that’s like “oh, he’s gay, I like that”.

~And like you say, it should really be your songs that you’re judged on.

Yeah, I think the people that are listening to my music are there because they like my music.

~Are you in a relationship at the moment?

No, I’m single.

~What kind of guy do you go for?

Pretty boys.

~Will you be going to any pride festivals?

My schedule is like PACKED, so probably no pride festivals this year. I was really excited that I got to close gay pride in Sydney though, a couple of months back. That was really fun.

~Tell me about your single, ‘Whataya Want From Me’.

Yeah. It was written by Pink, and Max Martin. It’s a great song. I think it holds a really universal message which is that moment in any sort of relationship which is, “I like you, but I’m overwhelmed and I’m vulnerable right now and it’s kind of freaking me out. I need a second”. I think it’s something we can all relate to.

~What have you got coming up in the near future?

I’m on tour here in the States until September and then we go international. We go over to Asia, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and then we do Japan and then we go over to the UK.

The second single, ‘Whataya Want From Me’, from Adam’s debut album, For Your Entertainment is out in the UK on July 19th

  1. Adamisamazing says:

Another great interview from Adam. I hope he gets to collaborate with Bowie one day. I know he wants to sing with Christina Aguilera too. I am also glad he had a day off to just hang out. He sure deserves it as much as he gives to his fans. He is working so hard, but has such a great attitude and seem to be enjoying the tour. As we all knew, he’s going to keep things exciting for all of us by always changing things up. He’s never dull, and that’s just one of the things we love about him. After the International Tour, I know he will get some much needed R&R. I just love always hearing what he has to say…about anything and everything. Our BB is talking about B, B and B. 🙂

  2. LoveMeSomeAdam says:

I’m tired of people hating on Adam for being Gay!! I feel like they just have the need to talk crap about someone else for no reason other than to be negative for attention- but if they heard him sing without any knowledge of who he was prior to him coming out, anyone would say he is extremely talented.. my boyfriend thought he was good on American Idol then decided to be a hater once i became really into his music.. jealous boys.. geez not to mention they all wish they looked at good as Adam does!!!!!!! LOVE HIM- going to MB house of blues to see him this weekend and CANT STOP SMILING!!!!!

  3. libraglam says:

    1. I can’t wait to see Adam sing with Christina.
    2. Then i can’t wait to see him acting on any TV show or Movies. Man, i will probably go every day to see the movie he plays in it and buy that DVD so i can watch 24/7 LOL…..I am sure he will be an excellent actor. I watched ADAM on Wicked, OMG he was so good….i could feel the emotions that i wanted cry…..Imagine if ADAM play a role in a drama movie….probably i have to bring many box of kleenex with me….he can make me laugh and cry easily !!!

    • marlene says:

u should see him in the ten commandments with val kilmwer.i couldn’t take my eyes off of him i looked for him in every scene.

  4. Katherine.333 says:

I find Adam’s honesty so refreshing. He interviews extremely well. I find him mesmerizing. He is the whole package. His music and vocal range is extraordinary. He is a role model for everyone. His message of knowing who you are and embracing it is inspiring. I will enjoy him for years to come as his career has longevity. He is a true entertainer and quite the showman. Anything he does will have his loyal fan base tuned in. Keep up the great work Adam.

  5. What Adam’s got that maybe many of us don’t have is his freedom, individuality, and self-possession. He is charting his course like nobody can, and makes no excuses.
He is just himself no matter what, but can also make all the sacrifices to achieve his dreams.

  6. I had a good laugh when he said that he had gone the conservative way, as that was his schtick on Idol. I laughed because, when I saw his show in NYC all I could think was ‘OMG, he really had to reign himself in, on Idol.” What a Class Act! And to think a lot were freaking out because they THOUGHT he was gay., on Idol. Hello????

He did say for the fuck of it, didn’t he.? I’m okay with that, as I can’t stop laughing. He is so very entertaining! He always gives such a good interview and they have to love asking the questions, and waiting to see what he is going to come out with, and they are never disappointed, because of his honesty and great sense of humor..

I love him because that voice, alone, just sends shivers down me. Adam has that effect on me, and all his fans. Being gay was never an issue with me, as I have two nephews who are gay and my niece’s son is gay and, let me tell you, I love them to bits!! I keep in touch with one, on a regular basis, even though we don’t live in the same country.

I applaud Adam’s view on “representing” the gay community. He’s absolutely spot on. This is his career and what means the most to him, right now, is his music. It would not be fair to presume that he would get involved, as he hardly has time for himself. I’m sure he is involved, to a certain extent, as he is part of the community.
I wish him all the very best going overseas. He is of a curious nature,so I’m sure there will be places and sights he may want to visit, if he has the time.

Adam, we will miss you, but we are so happy for you. You’re dream has come true!

  7. AllaboutAdam says:

awwww….He’s SINGLE! ….HOW CAN THAT BE POSSIBLE? For some reason, when he says that – I love him even more. He didn’t elaborate this time. For some reason I see love – the real deal – as something that keeps eluding him, and i can’t figure that out. I imagine he’s an expert at relationships as he is with everything else he does… But maybe not? Thoughts? anyone? Another interesting question….Which one of us would not simply HAVE TO give it a shot – hitting on him – if given an opportunity? Yes, it’s a shot in the dark, but you’d have to take the shot – in the right setting, and if you’re a woman: having those few drinks that make him want to make out with you…. and then…….hell, my stomach turns somersaults with the thought. Sweet dreams.

    • If you listen to the songs he writes and the ones he sings then talks about, Sleepwalker, etc. you get the feeling he was burned badly at some point. But then who hasn’t experienced that one all emblazing love that doesn’t work, but you never forget. Those relationships are too intense, and Adam probably realizes it is easier to stay single at this point in his career then have his hard work sabatoged by love. Or, I could be wrong!!! Either way I should be voting top 20 instead of reading and writing on this site.

    • My thoughts daily…just wish I were younger.
Three friends that know I am an Adam obsessed person tease me all the time..they just roll with laughter. My kids think I am crazy…that is OK. I told them I was not suffering from dementia. or insanity. I know the days of the week and where I am…..I can still feed and bathe myself, teach math and science…I am just totally enamored with Adam. If I were to ever see him…well I’d either slobber and drool all over myself or die right there. LOL! Maybe not, I held up well in Vegas with all I met, but they weren’t Adam.

  8. yall have a ball out their wish i was their with yall adam your a true friend in my heart love always keep on rockin’ (love)

  9. I love Adam’s music and listen to it constantly…..I am an older mother and grandmother and I don’t care what he does in his time off and private life….He is beautiful and got the most amazing talent I have seen in years…..He is the greatest…..entertainer….Seen 3 of his shows, and 3 to go…..

  10. Oh My God!! This is the first time I’ve heard that he’s heading down under down under (New Zealand) I’m so excited I can hardly breathe!!! WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!
I’m jumping up & down & squealing like a little girl (husband is giving me the side-eye)
Hope I get to meet some of Adam’s lovely fans that visit this site – this is soooo going to be the highlight of the year for us, I’ve been watching footage of Adam’s concert on You Tube, wishing I was there & now it’s like a dream come true. Gonna save some bucks so if he does a few shows can be at them all!

    • Sha, someone said he is coming to OZ in september for a week, not on tour just to visit…yay

      • Yeeee Haaa! Oz is just a hop skip & a jump across the ditch for us too!
Might have to go catch up with some Aussie relatives that particular week!

  11. I cannot wait for his international tour, and Adam confirming UK that really is very very exciting news. He has remained true to himself all the way through his rise to fame, he is an exceptional and very talented artist, cannot wait for his next album.

  12. mlizglamgirl4ever says:

the thought of bowie and adam working together makes me go crazy thinking about it, BOWIE has been my #1 idol for over 35 years, and now adam is right up there for me with bowie. to think what these two artistic mega talented performers could do make me ?????????????????????????? one can only dream and hope.
